Here are some great tips to make Back to School easy
Going to big school is exciting, nerve wracking and terrifying all at once. Think back to your first day on a new job and you will get a bit of a feel for what your little one will be going through.
Here's a few simple tips to help make starting Prep or pre-school much easier:
- Practice at home. Even if your child is used to daycare, practice using their new lunchbox and drink bottle for a few lunches at home. They will get used to how to open and close them, and be able to work out what to eat for little lunch and big lunch.
- Go for a walk through the school. The week before school starts and the teachers are there, take a walk through the school and find the water bubblers, toilets, office and school bus waiting areas (or car pick up zones). Taking a quiet walk around the school when there are no other kids around helps to deal with nerves and builds confidence.
- Pack emergency undies. Even a fully toilet trained child may have accidents when they start at school. Teachers understand this and help children discretely manage. Talk to your child about the possibility and pack "emergency undies" just in case.
- Read books together. There are lots of good picture books available about starting school. Visit your local library or good bookstore to find one, and read it together with your child. You may want to "act out" the book with your child's teddies – kids often can have their teddies say what they are too afraid to say out loud.
- Label everything. Losing books, items of clothing or lunchboxes can make the strongest child upset. By labelling everything clearly with your child's name, you make this problem less likely to happen, and makes quickly finding lost property easy. Check out all the cute labels you can use to easily identify all of your child's belongings.
- Talk about things. Help your child understand how long the school day is, that they are not to leave the school grounds without permission (yes, kids walking home during the first day is remarkably common), and to talk with their teacher if they are sad or have a problem.
- Be positive. Kids pick up on your feelings, so focus on the positive sides of being at school.
- Leave. On the first day, don't prolong the farewells – help your child put their things away, introduce yourself to the teacher and then leave. The teachers are trained to deal with sad children and you could make things more difficult for them by remaining. That said, many first day mums end up at the local coffee shop for a good cry/celebration together.
