You know that random ingredient you buy for one recipe, and then the rest of the jar goes mouldy at the back of the fridge? Been there! If I can’t think of a second use, it usually goes back on the shelf.

2. Write down a quick menu for the week

No colour-coded meal plan needed. Just jot down a rough menu for the week. Our food waste dropped heaps once we started shopping from a plan instead of winging it in the aisles and coming home with three things that don’t even make a meal.

3. Put new groceries at the back and older food at the front

Channel your inner supermarket. When I unpack, the older stuff shuffles to the front and the new stuff goes behind it, so the older food gets eaten first. This stops so many things from turning into science experiments.

5. Don’t overfill the fridge

Leave some breathing room. I know a packed fridge feels like you’re nailing mum life, but it makes it harder to see what you’ve got. Dimity summed up what happens next perfectly: open the fridge, sigh, shut the fridge, order pizza.

6. Use a Lazy Susan with the labels facing out

I’m slightly offended by the name (being a Susan myself!), but these turntables are brilliant for fridge organisation. All the little jars that used to get lost at the back now live on a spinner. I turn it to find what I need and keep the labels facing out. It saves time and stops accidental double-buys.

7. Containers, never bowls

This one’s 100% Dimity. Because the onions live in the fridge, the drawer is always full of papery skins, capsicum seeds and all the little bits a cloth just pushes around. So I grab the vacuum, pop on the long hose and give it a go.
